How do I upload website files with File Manager?
Open cPanel → Domains, find your domain and choose its Document Root link to open the correct folder in File Manager. Choose Upload, check the destination shown on File Upload, then use Select File. Selecting or dropping a file starts the upload immediately. Leave Overwrite existing files unticked unless you have backed up and deliberately intend to replace matching files. For a database-driven site, create the website database separately.
Prepare the correct files and folder
- Sign in to your account, find the correct hosting service in Services and choose Log in to cPanel. On a phone, choose cPanel. Check the service domain before continuing.
- Open Domains and find the exact domain you are updating. In the Document Root column, choose its folder link. That opens File Manager for the website's folder. The main website often uses
public_html, but another domain can use a different folder. - Compare the path shown in File Manager with the domain's document root. For an image or another file that belongs inside a subfolder, open that subfolder before choosing Upload. Do not upload into the account's home folder just because File Manager opened there first.
- For an existing website, make a backup and keep a copy of the files you plan to replace. Check that your new files belong to this website and are ready for visitors. Uploading into the live website folder can change what visitors see immediately.
- Keep database exports, full backups and files containing passwords outside the public website folder. Upload only the files your website is meant to serve or run. A database import is a separate task, covered by our import guide.
Upload a file
- In the intended File Manager folder, choose Upload. The File Upload tab names the destination folder at the top. Read it before selecting a file.
- Leave Overwrite existing files unticked for a new file. If you need to replace an existing file, confirm its exact name and backup first, then deliberately tick the option. A replacement can remove working content with the same name.
- Choose Select File and select the prepared file on your computer, or drag the file into Drop files here to start uploading. This starts the upload; there is no separate Save button on this page. Do not select an archive or folder as a test.
- Wait for the upload to complete and check the result shown beside the file. Repeat for the other prepared files. Check the upload maximum displayed on your own File Upload page rather than using a limit from another account.
- Choose Go Back to the destination folder. Confirm that the uploaded file appears in the expected location, with the expected name and size. File names and letter case must match the references used by the website.
Check the website
- Open the affected page or file using your domain. A home page must sit in the website folder at the level your application expects; putting the whole site inside an extra folder changes its location.
- If you uploaded a ZIP file, the ZIP itself is still an archive. Uploading it does not unpack or install the website. Do not extract an archive over an existing site without checking its contents, destination and backup first. For a complete site move, use our migration guide to include the database and website settings too.
- If the new files are present but the page still shows old content, follow our cache-clearing guide. If the domain shows a parked page or another site, use our wrong-website checks before uploading more copies.
- For repeated transfers or a whole folder tree, our secure FTPS guide explains how to connect a file-transfer app. File Manager uploads and FTPS both change the files in their chosen destination.
- If an upload fails, keep its exact message, filename, size and destination folder, then contact Tech/Server through Support → New Ticket. Do not send a backup or configuration file containing passwords unless we arrange a suitable way to share it.
